Ideas for your balcony, window and table on December 7 with LED lanterns from $ 18.900 (COP), and when to order so they arrive in time.

Night balcony in Medellín with three grey hanging lanterns and two black filigree lanterns, 3D printed and lit by LED candles, facing the city lights

For Día de las Velitas (Little Candles Day), on the night of Monday, December 7, you can light up your balcony, window and table with 3D printed lanterns and LED candles: the wind won't blow them out, they don't smoke and they don't burn. At Lío we print them in Medellín and ship anywhere in Colombia, from $ 18.900 (Colombian pesos, COP). To get them in time, order by November 25 (November 30 in Medellín).

What is celebrated on the night of December 7?

It is the eve of the feast of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, which the Church has celebrated on December 8 since Pope Pius IX proclaimed the dogma in 1854. At dusk, families in Colombia light candles and lanterns on sidewalks, balconies and windows. Many homes pray together, share natilla and buñuelos, and that light marks the start of Christmas. This year the 7th falls on a Monday, and Tuesday the 8th is a public holiday.

For many families it is also the day to set up the nativity scene. If you don't have one yet, here is how to choose a nativity for your space.

Why are our lanterns made for LED candles?

Because we print them in PLA, a plastic that starts to soften at around 55 °C. A real flame inside the lantern heats its walls above that temperature, and the lantern warps. That is why every lantern in this guide is made for an LED candle, which is not included.

And LED candles have real advantages:

  • They don't go out with the wind on the balcony or when someone opens the door.
  • No smoke and no dripping wax on the railing, the tablecloth or the floor.
  • They last the whole season: the same candle works for the novena, Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. Just change the battery.
  • Easy around kids and pets: if a lantern falls over, there is no fire.

Look for LED tea lights (the small round ones, about 38 mm wide) with warm light, which looks more like a flame; cool white light feels less cozy. With small children around, check that the battery cover is firmly closed: button batteries must stay out of their reach.

If your family's tradition is to light wax candles, light them separately, on tile, concrete or a plate, away from curtains and from the printed lanterns.

Balcony ideas

The balcony is the classic spot on candle night, because it can be seen from the street.

  • A row along the railing. The hanging lantern ($ 26.900) has a ring on top: hang it from the railing or a hook with a short cord. Three or four in a row fill the balcony with light. If it's windy, tie it down so it doesn't knock against the railing.
  • A lantern in the corner. The black filigree lantern ($ 47.900) has a lace-like dome and arched windows: the light comes through the cut-outs and casts patterns on the wall and floor.
  • Mix heights: some hanging, others on the floor or on a small table, so the light isn't all in one line.

Keep them under a roof, out of the rain and direct sun. A covered balcony is ideal.

Window ideas

If your apartment has no balcony, the window is your balcony: it can be seen from outside too.

  • A shadow scene. The light-up arch with Santa and sleigh ($ 52.900) has layered cut-outs of a snowy village. With an LED candle or an LED strip in the base, the silhouettes light up. Decide whether you'll look at it from inside or from the street, and turn it that way.
  • Several covers in a row. The Christmas LED candle cover ($ 18.900 each) slips over an LED candle and comes in five designs: tree with moon, nativity, gingerbread men, Santa with reindeer, or snowflakes. Three or five on the windowsill look great.

Table ideas

For dinner on the 7th, the natilla or the novena:

  • A centerpiece. The Christmas forest silhouette with reindeer ($ 50.900) has trees and reindeer cut out in layers on a base with two slots for LED candles. The light comes from behind and leaves deep shadows.
  • For the kids. The light-up reindeer ($ 22.900) spreads the light through its whole body. It looks good on a nightstand or in their room, and they can keep it close with no risk of burns.

How much do they cost?

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a real candle?

No. PLA starts to soften at around 55 °C, and a flame inside the lantern warps it. Always use an LED candle. If your family lights wax candles, place them separately, on tile, concrete or a plate, away from the lantern.

Is the candle included?

No, the LED candle is sold separately. LED tea lights work, the small round ones about 38 mm wide. Some product pages give the exact size: the light-up reindeer, for example, takes candles up to 39 mm.

How long do they take to arrive?

Printing takes 2 to 5 days depending on the model, and shipping with Coordinadora 1 to 3 business days. To have them by December 7, order by November 25 (November 30 in Medellín). If that date has passed, message us on WhatsApp and we'll tell you if we can make it.

Can they go outdoors?

Only under a roof: a covered balcony, a window or a porch, out of the rain and direct sun. If you want them for a sidewalk, a front yard or an open patio, message us on WhatsApp before ordering.

Do you make them in bulk or in other colors?

Yes. For residential buildings, parishes or offices, or if you want a color that isn't on the product page, message us on WhatsApp or get a free quote, and we'll confirm price and date before we start.
